Reading opens doors to imagination, knowledge, and creativity! That’s why I love hearing storied from parents as to how the Sophie Says book series has helped their children become excited about reading. Here are five simple steps to get your child excited about reading and instil a lifelong love for books.
Designate a special spot in your home filled with comfy pillows, blankets, and good lighting. Make it a cosy, inviting space just for reading. Let your child personalise this nook with their favourite books, decorations and teddies. A comfortable environment can make reading feel like a delightful escape.
Encourage your child to pick their own books. Take them to the library or book shop and allow them to explore different genres and topics that interest them. When they have a say in their reading material, they’re more likely to feel invested in the experience. You might set a “book date” where you explore together!
Set aside time to read aloud as a family. Choose engaging stories that spark conversations and encourage questions. Your enthusiasm for the story will inspire them to turn the pages and discover new worlds. Make it interactive by using different voices for characters and asking them questions about the plot.
Use audiobooks or e-readers to make reading more interactive. Many children enjoy the convenience of digital formats and multimedia storytelling. Explore apps and websites that offer engaging reading experiences tailored to your child’s interests. You might even have a family audiobook night where you listen together!
Create themed reading nights or book clubs with friends. Incorporate activities, crafts, or snacks related to the stories you read. For example, after reading a book about cooking, you could try making a recipe together. This not only enhances the reading experience but also creates cherished memories.
By fostering a love for reading, you’re opening a world of possibilities for your child. Let’s make reading an exciting adventure that encourages curiosity and imagination!
I knew I wanted him to grow up understanding that both girls and boys could achieve anything that they set their minds to, but I couldn’t find any books that featured a female lead character (a human one, not an animal one!) that really represented the message I wanted to teach him. So I thought, if I can’t find the story I want to tell, I’d better write it myself.
